MP4 → OGG

MP4 to OGG converter

The MP4’s audio track is decoded and encoded to Ogg Vorbis, a royalty-free lossy codec; the video is ignored. Since MP4 audio is usually AAC, this is a lossy-to-lossy conversion.

Ogg Vorbis is the audio format game engines and open-source tools prefer. Godot imports it natively, Unity streams it efficiently, and Wikimedia accepts it where it refuses MP3 and AAC. If your source is a screen capture, a gameplay clip or a recorded sound effect saved as video, converting it to OGG gives you an asset you can drop straight into a project.

This page decodes the MP4 in a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg in your tab and encodes with libvorbis, using either an average bitrate or Vorbis’s own quality scale. You can trim to the part you need, switch to mono for positional game audio, and normalize loudness so a batch of effects all sit at the same level.

Does this change the audio quality?

Both sides of this conversion are lossy, so the encoder is working from audio that has already been through a codec. The result is one generation further from the original recording. Vorbis at 160 kbps is transparent for most material, so the second generation is rarely audible.

  • Safari and iOS cannot play Ogg Vorbis. For files people will open on an iPhone, use MP4 to MP3 or MP4 to M4A instead.
  • Surround audio is kept as surround unless you choose stereo or mono.
  • Only the first audio track is extracted.

A worked example

Turning recorded gameplay clips into Godot sound assets

  1. Drop the MP4 captures into the queue.
  2. Turn on Trim and set the start and length of the sound you need.
  3. Set Channels to mono for sounds that will be positioned in 3D, and enable loudness normalization so every effect matches.
  4. Convert and copy the OGG files into your project’s audio folder.

Quality 5 or 160 kbps covers almost every game and web use

Vorbis quality 5 (about 160 kbps stereo) is the usual default for music and ambience in games. Short effects can go to quality 3 to save space with little audible change. Mono halves the size again and is correct for anything the engine positions in space, because the stereo image is discarded at playback anyway.

Supported formats, limits and browser notes

Sonic Batch decodes with the browser when it can (faster, no engine download) and falls back to the self-hosted WebAssembly engine when it cannot. Every combination below works in every listed browser; the column only tells you which decoder does the work.

These are enforced ceilings, checked before any decoding starts, not measured maximums — a file over the limit is rejected rather than allowed to exhaust the tab’s memory. Real-world capacity is lower on older phones, which is why the scheduler runs one file at a time on iOS and Safari.

Where your audio goes

Nowhere. Your file is read from disk into this browser tab with the File API, decoded and encoded by code running in that same tab, and handed back to you as a download. It is never transmitted.

That is a structural property of the application, not a policy promise: there are no API routes, no server actions and no third-party processing services in this project, so there is nothing capable of receiving a file. The page’s Content-Security-Policy also restricts connections to this origin, and the automated test suite includes a browser test that fails if any network request during import, preview, conversion or download carries media bytes.

The trade-off, stated plainly: results live in your tab’s memory until you download them. Closing or reloading the page discards them. There is nothing on a server to recover, because nothing was ever put there.

Troubleshooting

The OGG will not play on my iPhone.

Apple devices have no Vorbis decoder. That is a platform limit, not a broken file; use MP3 or M4A for Apple listeners.

Godot or Unity reports the wrong length.

Video files sometimes start audio slightly before the first frame. Use Trim to cut the exact range, which also removes any leading silence.

Is OGG the same as Opus?

No. OGG here means Vorbis audio in an Ogg container. Opus is a newer codec that can also live in Ogg; choose it from the batch converter if your tool supports it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert MP4 to OGG?

Add the MP4 files above, choose a bitrate or quality, and press Convert all. The OGG files download individually or as a ZIP.

Does MP4 to OGG lose quality?

A little. The MP4’s AAC audio is decoded and encoded again as Vorbis, which is a second lossy step. At 160 kbps or quality 5 it is very hard to hear.

Are my videos uploaded?

No. All processing happens in your browser with a self-hosted engine, and nothing can be sent to another server.

Can I convert other video files to OGG?

Yes. MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI, WMV, FLV and 3GP are accepted too.
